The Dancing Plague of 1518: "The Mystery That Made Hundreds Dance to Their Death"
JULY 1518
Strasbourg, France.
It was just another ordinary day.
People were busy with their daily chores when, out of nowhere, a woman stepped into the streets... and started dancing
At first, everyone thought she had simply gone crazy. After all, who would dance when there is no music, no festival or no celebration.
But then, something even stranger happened, she didn't stop.
Hours turned into days, and days into weeks. Soon, others began dancing too. The number kept growing rapidly, and what started with a single woman soon became one of history's most terrifying unsolved mysteries...
The Dancing Plague of 1518.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Imagine waking up the next morning, expecting everything to be back to normal, but it wasn't.
The woman, later identified in historical records as Frau Troffea, was still dancing.
One day passed, Then another. Yet she refused to stop.
Soon, the numbers took a rapid increase.
Within weeks, historical records suggest that nearly 400 people were dancing through the streets of Strasbourg.
But this was no ordinary dance.
The streets echoed with cries of pain as people danced uncontrollably. Some reportedly danced until their feet bled, while others collapsed from exhaustion. Contemporary accounts even claimed that some people died from heart attacks, strokes, or sheer exhaustion, though historians still debate how many deaths actually occurred.
Yet despite the pain...
They just kept dancing. Nobody could explain what was happening.
The Authorities' Solution
As the number of dancers continued to increase, the city authorities began searching for ways to stop the mysterious outbreak.
But instead of forcing the dancers to rest, the people of Strasbourg believed the dancers were suffering from a curse.
They did the exact opposite.
Believing that the only cure was to let the victims dance until the illness left their bodies, they hired musicians and even built wooden stages for the dancers.
People gathered to watch, hoping the strange spectacle would soon come to an end.
It didn't.
Instead, more and more people joined in, and the mysterious plague only seemed to spread further.
The authorities had tried everything they believed would help...
But nothing worked.
How Did It End?
Realizing their plan had only made things worse, the authorities banned all dancing and public music.
The victims were then taken to a shrine dedicated to Saint Vitus, where people believed prayers and religious rituals could break the mysterious curse.
Surprisingly, the number of dancers slowly began to decrease, and within a few weeks, the strange outbreak had finally come to an end.
But even today, no one knows exactly why it stopped.
AUTHOR'S THOUGHTS
History has solved countless mysteries, but the Dancing Plague of 1518 remains one of the strangest.
If you ask me in modern science and phycology we do have some explanation like stress, mass hysteria etc...
We yet don't know the exact reason,
so, I guess some mysteries are meant to remain mysteries.
